Happy birthday, Marines

Marines of the Corporal Johnny A. Williamson Detachment #1165, Marine Corps League and guests gathered at Pinewood Country Club Nov. 10 to celebrate the U.S. Marine Corps’ 242nd birthday that day. They read the birthday message from the commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Robert B. Neller, and held a cake-cutting ceremony recognizing the oldest and youngest Marines present — Historian Carlton Cheek, 83, and Greg Callicutt, 34. Guest speaker was author/journalist Tracy Crow. The detachment, chartered in 2004, meets the third Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The American Legion Post 45, 419 Lanier Ave., Asheboro.
