Surface Navy 2018: USN to test Saab’s ASW training system in 2018

The US Navy (USN) will begin a three-month evaluation of Saab’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training system later this year.

The demonstration will take place at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) in the Bahamas using the company’s AUV62-AT, an artificial acoustic system that mimics a submarine.

AUV62-AT, which is both active and passive target, was designed around the Swedish Navy’s Mk 62 torpedo. The platform can be programmed to emit signals similar to existing submarines, for example, it can transmit signals to appear as a Russian Akula-class submarine, Chris Lade, defence sales manager for Saab, told Jane’s on 9 January at the annual Surface Navy Association conference in Arlington, Virginia.
