EDWARDSVILLE – The U.S. Navy Band is coming to Edwardsville.
The Navy Band, one of the signature outreach programs of the U.S. Navy, has selected Edwardsville as one of 21 cities in 12 states to host a performance during its 2018 tour.
The U.S. Navy Concert Band performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 8 at Edwardsville High School.
The Navy Concert Band, the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy, presents a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for nearly 90 years.
The U.S. Navy Band, which is based at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., is the flagship musical organization of the Navy, and one of 11 Navy bands located around the world.
One of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibilities involves touring the country, and it has been doing so since 1925. All of the band’s primary performing units embark each year on concert tours throughout specified regions of the country, allowing the band to reach out to audiences in areas of the country that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis.
Sailors in the Navy Band are full-time professional musicians, and almost all of the sailors in the Navy Band have undergraduate degrees in music, while most have graduate degrees.
These enlisted musicians, 170 of them, are recruited from the finest music schools and professional musical organizations, and perform over 270 public concerts and 1,300 ceremonies each year. In addition to their demanding performance and rehearsal schedules, band members are responsible for the daily administration of the organization, including operations, public affairs, a large music library, information systems and supply.
In addition, as the Navy’s musical ambassadors, band members maintain the highest standards of appearance, military bearing and physical fitness.
The concerts the Navy Band perform are family-friendly events as their goal is to be entertaining to veterans, families, individuals and those interested in joining the Navy.
The Concert Band 2018 tour, which will be performing March 8 in Edwardsville, will cover 21 cities and nearly 5,000 miles.
Marvin Battle, EHS Director of Bands, explained that the Navy Band has a National Tour Manager who was sent to check out all of the local areas who could possibly host the event. He pointed out that there were several criteria they used in their selection process such as size of the performance venue, ease of access to the venue, load-in and load-out capabilities, acoustical aspects, and location. “A site visit was conducted in December to see if Edwardsville High School would satisfy the requirements,” Battle said. “Edwardsville High School not only met but exceeded all of their criteria. Based on this approval, we were able to move forward and formally host the event.”
All Navy Band performances are free and open to the public, however, tickets are required. Reserve tickets by visiting www.edwardsvillebands.com “For many years, Navy bands have […]
