Navy mixes up Marines’ files

Source: WGCL Steven Davis of Brookhaven says he was shocked when he received a letter from the Department of the U.S. Navy eight years ago describing him as someone else.

"It says that I re-enlisted in the Marine Corp, never re-enlisted, also he was discharged for using amphetamines and methamphetamines, that’s not on my records…and he went UA for 8 days, I never went UA."

Davis’ own military records prove what he’s saying is true. He served in the Marines overseas for three years. He has what’s called an "Other Than Honorable" discharge for getting into bar fights.

Something an attorney tells me is easy to get upgraded but the Davis who lives in California has a dis-honorable discharge and the paper work screw-up is making it impossible for this Davis to get approved for disability compensation from the VA.

"I’ve been trying myself for 8 years."

But no one from the department of navy will call him back.

Davis was diagnosed with PTSD and schizophrenia. He still tears up talking about his experience in boot camp almost 40 years ago.

"The gear closet…they call it the boot closet and what they’d do–it would be two or three drill instructors already and one would open the door and he’d push you in there and you never knew what punches were coming from what kicks were coming from."

Davis struggles with flash backs to those times he was locked inside the dark closet. He can’t work and is living off social security. He spends his nights sleeping on a futon because he can’t afford a bed.

"I shouldn’t have to deal with that especially when i’m being denied, being judged by someone else’s records that’s almost like going to prison for 20 years but then it’s not you"

I’ve also been trying to get in touch with the Department of Navy but no one has called me back. Davis is working with attorneys from Georgia State University’s veteran law clinic for help.

CBS46 reached out to the VA as well and they cant. not until the navy upgrades his discharge but first they need to correct his paperwork and there’s no telling how long that could take.
